RUMOR MILL: 360 to get Divx/Xvid Support

This rumor just in, the 360 christmas dashboard upgrade (the one coming out around the same time as the ps3) we already know its getting some organizational upgrades, and other cool stuff. And their has been outstanding hope for playing video files from USB or CD/DVD’s in wmv and mpeg format… and their has been alot of pleeding for the ability for a way to copy movies to the 360′s internal harddrive… and the all important request for DIVX/XVID SUPPORT via the 360 Extender.

Currently playback is limited to Windows Generic formats, like Mpeg, WMV, ASF etc… but if this rumor holds true, we might be seeing divx and xvid support this christmas :) (no word on those other things i mentioned and really want above LOL)

The rumor comes courtesy of Xlive.nl (via xboxic) at a microsoft retail training seminar for the 360, xlife asked a microsoft rep about divx support and got a most suprising response.

After the event I had a short talk with the host and asked him whether there’d ever be support for DivX and Xvid playback. Much to my surprise he started telling me that Microsoft is working hard to implement this and a firmware update is expected within 2 months allowing you to play DivX and Xvid directly on the 360.

Then XboxIC decided to ask around their own insiders and got something else of interest that makes 100% sense, and adds to that whole Microsoft strategy of “lets deflate the ps3 launch even further” or with all the bad sony plublicty lately its more of a “Lets kick em while their down!” plan lol.

XboxIC’s insider had this to say which seems extremely logical: “Well the PS3 used to have 1080p, high-def DVD and DivX playback as its strong points over the 360, and so far we’ve taken down two of them…”
