It appears that SanDisk’s are announcing the extreme upgrade in the coming year to their SSD drives. The new technology dubbed ExtremeFFS (Flash File System). It is a new page based file system this allows for data locations on the drive to not be physically tied to the actual location on the drive as is currently done on the drives. This in tests means that random write speeds are going to be around 100 times faster than the current drives on the market.

SanDisk is hoping that the new file system along with upcoming standards will catch a bit of fire under the SSD adoption in PC’s. It’s kind of nice to see theirs more to be done to improve SSD and it’s not a barcode scanners style technology that will sit idle for ever just changing in sizes. This is all great news considering Microsoft announced that in the future when Windows 7 releases it will include optimizations for use of these new SSD drives. While right now the new ExtremeFFS drives have been mentioned and the technology is known the actual release date hasn’t been set but SanDisk expects them to ship sometime in 2009 before Windows 7 in time that Microsoft should be able to fine tune their usage.
